Patients undergoing chemoradiation (ChRT) may be at greater risk to develop both acute and late xerostomia. The dose-volume relationship for parotid gland tolerance in patients treated with RT alone may underestimate the tolerance to xerostomia in patients treated with ChRT. The purpose of this study is to compare the rates of acute and late xerostomia in patients undergoing RT alone vs. ChRT for treatment of head and neck cancer (HNC) using a multi-institutional system-wide HNC database.
