A total of 199 patients with early-stage breast cancer were treated prospectively with interstitial brachytherapy APBI from 1992-2001. Patients in the APBI group were matched to 199 patients receiving WBRT to compare differences in outcome based on irradiated breast volume. Match criteria included tumor size, LN status, age, margin status, ER status, and use of adjuvant Tamoxifen. Endpoints included 12-yr estimates of ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence (IBTR), contralateral breast failure (CF), freedom from failure (FFF), regional nodal failure (RNF), distant metastases-free survival (DMFS), cause-specific survival (CSS), and cosmesis. Molecular classification of IBTR as clonally related (CR) or clonally distinct (CD) was performed using loss of heterozygosity (LOH) on 14 of 16 recurrences.
